Why does WhatsApp stop working on some cell phones?

One of the reasons why these phones will be without WhatsApp is because their operating system will no longer be updated.

Only cell phones that have Android 4.1 or lower will no longer have WhatsApp. In the case of iOS, there are only 3 Apple phones on which it will no longer operate correctly.
