This season the New York Mets have had some injuries on their roster, so they have had to turn to their prospects to cover the absences. Francisco Álvarez, Brett Baty and Mark Vientos have been chosen to join the Mets’ big team and have performed well.
The fans nicknamed them the “BabyMets” and in their first 30 games in the Major Leagues they have put up interesting numbers, which shows the potential that the players have in the New York roster.
Francisco Alvarez
The first to reach the big team was Venezuelan catcher Francisco Álvarez, who, in addition to earning a starting position behind the plate, is averaging .246 with 8 home runs, 28 hits and 19 RBIs with the Mets team. Álvarez was one of the main candidates for promotion this season, since he is the third best prospect in the Major Leagues, but his arrival in the majors was brought forward after injuries to Tomás Nido and Omar Narváez.
Brett Batty
Third baseman Brett Baty was the second “BabyMets” to arrive. With just 139 major league at-bats, he already has 30 hits, 15 RBIs and 4 home runs. He has also been a regular at third base for the Queens team.
Mark Winds
Just a week ago Mark Vientos was promoted to the first team. The 23-year-old infielder has played third base and first base. He only has 11 games in the big tent and he already hit his first home run. Vientos is one of the top 7 prospects on the New York team.
These moves confirm the confidence the Mets have in their youngsters. In addition, together with veterans such as Eduardo Escobar, Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, they have created a balanced group between experience and youth.
The Mets are currently the 10th-worst offensive team in Major League Baseball, so they’ll need the BabyMets to improve on that front as well. In the East Division of the National League, they are in second place, 3.5 games behind the lead and with a record of 30 wins and 28 losses.
