A young motorcyclist lost his life while his passenger was taken to a hospital after a traffic accident in Brooklyn early Saturday morning, authorities said.
Identified as 21-year-old Nicholas Sanchez, he was riding his motorcycle southbound from Brooklyn on Fourth Avenue in Sunset Park at approximately 2:45 a.m. when he collided with a Jeep Grand Cherokee going east on 52nd Street, officials explained.
The 22-year-old passenger, a friend of Sanchez, was sitting behind the driver during the crash and the two were thrown from the motorcycle, officers said.
EMS transported the two men to NYU-Brooklyn Langone Hospital, where Sanchez could not be saved.
The 44-year-old driver of the Jeep was not injured and remained on the scene. So far no charges have been filed while the New York Police Department continues to investigate the case.
Sanchez resided in Williamsburg, about 6 miles from where the fatal crash happened, police said.
This would be the third time in less than a week that a motorist has been killed on the streets of New York City, police said.
At 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, an unidentified individual in his 20s was riding a Suzuki motorcycle on the Major Deegan Freeway near Exit 2 in The Bronx when he hit a barrier on the far-right canal and spun out. flying off the elevated highway to the deck below.
Authorities are trying to identify the motorcyclist.
On May 27, a 22-year-old motorcycle driver was thrown from his vehicle on the eastbound Long Island Expressway near Woodhaven Boulevard in Elmhurst, Queens. Later, he was struck by a passing truck. The man died at the scene, police said.
