A teenager from the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, identified as 18-year-old Benjamin Garrett, received a 22-year prison sentence for his involvement during a shooting that killed a 12-year-old girl. This was reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

During the trial, which began in March, Garrett pleaded guilty to the criminal charges brought against him by the Prosecutor’s Office: first degree negligent homicide and first degree negligent action.

The victim was identified as Olivia Schultz, a 12-year-old girl.

According to the Associated Press news agency, another 17-year-old boy, identified as Cornell Henard, is also accused of participating in the crime, and will be tried in July.

Prosecutor statements, reviewed by the Associated Press, indicate that everything happened on October 10, 2022, when Olivia’s family was returning home from shopping.

At that moment, two masked youths ambushed Olivia’s family in an alley behind their home. Shortly after, Olivia’s father, identified as Darryl Schultz, entered the house, and one of the youths pulled out a firearm. Olivia’s mother, identified as Celeste Wilson, begged them to leave them alone.

Immediately afterwards, the young people began to walk, and four houses from the home of Olivia’s family, they began to shoot at them. Celeste Wilson was shot in the back. Olivia too, a shot that took her life.

According to the Associated Press, the police could not determine which of the masked youths was the one who opened fire on Olivia’s family, so both were charged with the same charges.

Henard, one of the defendants, claimed that Olivia’s father came out of the house with a gun and started shooting at them. However, police reports reviewed by the Associated Press indicate that Schultz only started shooting when the youths started shooting.
