Not all the reflectors of justice are on the former president of the United States, Donald Trump. His assistant, Walt Nauta, was also charged with federal crimes for mishandling classified documents. However, his indictment hearing on Tuesday in Miami federal court was postponed.
The reason: Nauta has not been able to get a lawyer in the state of Florida to represent him. This was reported by the CNBC news portal.
For this reason, Nauta’s accusation hearing was delayed until July 6, in order to give him more time so that he can hire a lawyer to represent him, since this is one of the court rules for this type of procedure. .
Stan Woodward, an attorney for Nauta (out of Florida), said in a motion filed with the court that his client was unable to attend court on Tuesday because his flight from New Jersey was cancelled.
According to information from CNBC, former President Trump also had difficulties getting lawyers to represent him in the state of Florida.
Nauta was charged with conspiracy, making false statements and withholding documents Trump took after leaving the White House. He was also accused of obstruction of justice, according to a report by CNN en Español.
According to the investigation led by special counsel Jack Smith, Nauta apparently participated in the movement and transfer of boxes with classified documents at the Trump property, Mar-a-Lago, in Florida.
With the help of a maintenance worker from the private resort, Nauta reportedly moved boxes from the location before Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) officials executed a search warrant at the facility last year.
Nauta, according to a profile prepared by The New York Times, is one of Trump’s most valued assistants, and has worked with the former president at Mar-a-Lago since Trump’s presidential term ended.
If found guilty, Nauta could receive sentences of up to 20 years in prison.
