The former Argentine soccer player Claudio Paul Caniggia, runner-up in the world in Italy 1990, was prosecuted for the crime of “aggravated sexual abuse”, of which he was accused by his ex-wife and mother of his children, Mariana Nannis, and this Tuesday he was summoned to appear when I return to Buenos Aires from Spain.
The 56-year-old former striker was prosecuted with “provisional release” for the crime of aggravated sexual abuse against Nannis, by the national criminal and correctional court 18, subrogated by Judge Fabiana Palmaghini.
The ruling also established that Caniggia “must refrain from maintaining any kind of contact” with Nannis.
Despite the fact that the judge ordered Caniggia to “inform and prove, more than five business days in advance, when he will have to leave” Argentine territory, the prosecution found the player traveling in Spain, where he left on June 17.
The judge prohibited Caniggia on Tuesday from being absent from Argentina for 90 days without the express authorization of the court and that, in case he wants to be absent, he must inform him 15 business days in advance.
Likewise, he ordered him to appear the next business day upon his return to Argentina, on July 8. Caniggia’s lawyer, Fernando Burlando, told Agencia EFE that they will appeal the prosecution.
In February 2020, Nannis reported that in 2018 her ex-husband raped her in a hotel room in Buenos Aires.
In March 2022, Caniggia was investigated for these events, where he denied the charges and described the accusation of his ex-partner, with whom he was married for more than 33 years, as false.
“When I wanted to leave, he told me: ‘If you go out that door, I’m going to kill you, son of a bitch,'” Nannis declared, who also maintained that Caniggia hit him repeatedly.
Caniggia denied having abused, beaten or threatened his ex-partner.
Born in Henderson, Buenos Aires province, on January 9, 1967, Claudio Paul Caniggia made his football debut in 1985 at River Plate, with which he won, among other titles, a Copa Libertadores and an Intercontinental.
He also played for Boca Juniors, for the Italians Atalanta and Roma and the Portuguese Benfica, among other clubs, and was proclaimed champion with Argentina of the 1991 Copa América, the Confederations Cup and the Conmebol-USA Champions Cup.
