The Guadeloupe team gave the bell of the day this Tuesday in the Gold Cup by snatching a tie from Canada, equalizing 2-2 thanks to an own goal in added time, in a match that was played in Toronto.

Guadalupe equalized in stoppage time thanks to an own goal by Jacen Russell Rowe, two minutes before the referee, the American Rubiel Vázquez, declared the game over.

Russell-Rowe’s goal, in his first match for Canada, silenced the tens of thousands of Canadian supporters who packed Toronto’s BMO Field.

Canada, number 47 in the FIFA ranking and who started as the clear favorite against the Guadeloupe team, had problems from the start of the game to gain control of the game.

Canada coach John Herdman had to add numerous new additions to the line-up as some of his top players, including Alphonse Davies, Jonathan David, Cyle Larin, Alistair Johnston and Ismaël Koné, were unavailable.

In the first 20 minutes of the match, Guadeloupe easily outplayed Canada. The fruit of that dominance came the first goal of the match, after a pass from Jordan Leborgne to Thierry Ambrose who, after beating defender Steven Vitoria, hit a shot that went past veteran goalkeeper Milan Borjan.

Ambrose’s goal further frustrated the Canadians who were having difficulty controlling the Guadeloupean attackers.

In the second half, Canada’s game improved. A minute into the start of the second half, the referee conceded and later annulled a penalty in favor of the locals.

Finally, in the 49th minute, Lucas Cavallini equalized by converting a pass from Junior Hoilett. The goal allowed Canada to establish their game even more and in the 71st minute the local team took the lead 2-1 thanks to an own goal by Meddy Lina.

Canada was content with the result and attempted to run out the clock. But those from Guadalupe did not give up.

The referee added five minutes to regulation time and with two minutes remaining, a dangerous counterattack by Luther Archimede ended in a free kick on the edge of the box by Borjan.

After the kick, Russell Rowe tried to clear the ball but only managed an own goal that left the game at 2-2.
