In a world where sport is also a platform to establish social and political positions, FC Barcelona decided to celebrate this June 28, International LGBTQ+ Pride Day, by raising eight flags on the south side of the Johan Cruyff Stadium.

In a statement, the Catalan club announced that it chose the progressive Pride flag to celebrate this day, “with which it represents that it is a movement in constant progression and how there are still steps to be taken to achieve full integration and acceptance of the different groups in society.

“A total of eight flags have been placed, located in the South Goal, which will wave in the wind as a symbol of sexual diversity until July 6,” the statement added. for the club

Due to the remodeling works at the Espai Barça and at the Spotify Camp Nou, the place chosen to honor the LGTBQ+ community was the stadium where the women’s team and Barça Atlètic play their matches.

Throughout last season, the Barça team carried out various activities in favor of the community, since thanks to an association with the organization Panteres Grogues since 2022, workshops were held for young people from La Masia to raise awareness about the importance of educating themselves in diversity and give visibility to the cause.

The celebration of International Pride Day recalls the events that occurred in New York on June 28, 1969, where a violent police raid occurred at the Stonewall Inn gay bar. It was the first time that the gay community raised its voice in the face of the institutional and social repression it suffered. The first Pride march was held in New York on June 28, 1970.
