The desertion of Cuban athletes has become a constant every time the teams from the different disciplines leave Cuba to compete in international tournaments and the debut in the CONCACAF Gold Cup has not been the exception. And it is that four players left the concentration after the game in which they lost 0-1 against Guatemala.
The Cuban journalist based in the United States, Francys Romero, was the first to report the news, which was later confirmed by the island’s sports media ‘Jit’.
The footballers in question are: Roberney Caballero, Carlos Denilson Morales, Neisser Sandó and Jassael Herrera, who did not show up at the Miami airport (where they played against Guatemala) for their scheduled flight to Houston where they will face Guadalupe this Saturday. .
These casualties have not yet been covered by the Cuban team for the next Gold Cup matches, however, other players are expected to report to the concentration in Houston in the coming days.
So far in 2023, at least 30 Cuban athletes have abandoned the different national concentrations when they go out to compete in an international event, and if we take into account recent years, the figure exceeds one hundred.
The serious economic difficulties that Cubans have been suffering for more than two years have fueled an unprecedented exodus on the island. Only last year, 313,000 nationals arrived illegally at the southern border of the United States.
To this is added, in the case of athletes, the problems they have to go abroad and sign for foreign clubs, where they can earn much more than in the national competitions of their country during their short working lives.
In the official media these abandonments are usually reported as “serious indiscipline” and even “betrayals”.
