The “We Are All Florida” caravan, which left California over the weekend to tour several states until arriving in Florida to protest against SB 1718, the harsh anti-immigrant law imposed in that state by Republican governor and presidential candidate Ron DeSantis , is now touring Texas to continue to push for an economic boycott of Florida and rally immigrant rights advocates in its wake.
On the sixth day of the tour and activities of the caravan that departed from San Diego, California, its members held a demonstration in front of the San Antonio City Council in Texas, where members of the League of United Latino American Citizens (LULAC) joined the complaints against Florida’s anti-immigrant law.
Juan José Gutiérrez, director of the Full Rights for Immigrants Coalition, who is traveling with the caravan, said that the tour of Texas is important because the governor of that state, Republican Greg Abbott, also supports a campaign against immigrants.
“Abbott was promoting in the legislature another bill that criminalizes immigrants and we have a moral obligation to warn the public of the costs that these racist policies bring,” added the activist.
Wednesday’s tour culminates in Houston, where the caravan hopes to rally the support of truckers who have expressed their opposition to the SB1718 law, Gutiérrez said, so that they join the economic boycott of Florida.
The caravan participants are calling on activists across the United States to join them in an economic boycott of Florida and asking American consumers not to buy any products made or grown in Florida.
The boycott of Florida begins on June 30 and will end after July 4. The goal of the boycott is to stop companies and carriers, as well as consumers, from supporting DeSantis and also so that legislators who support him face the consequences of their decisions.
The “Todos Somos Florida” caravan made a stop in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Tuesday morning and El Paso in the afternoon.
The caravan plans to tour the state of Louisiana on Thursday and arrive on Friday, June 30, in the capital of Florida, Tallahassee.
“We are aware that this caravan is not going to stop the implementation of the law, but this effort aims to create a movement that pushes voters to stop this kind of abuse,” argued Gutiérrez.
