Riots broke out in the French capital after police shot dead a 17-year-old boy who failed to stop when ordered to by traffic police.
A disturbing video circulating on social media shows a police officer pointing a gun at the driver of a car, before a shot is heard. The car then crashes to a stop.
The teenager, identified as Nahel, died of gunshot wounds to the chest despite the help of the emergency services; while the officer accused of shooting him has been detained on murder charges.
The shooting sparked a series of protests Tuesday night in Nanterre, the area west of Paris where the teenager was killed, the BBC reports.
Nahel is the second person this year in France to be killed in a police shooting during a traffic stop. Last year, a record 13 people died this way.
According to the French media, the media collects, the police initially suggested that the teenager was driving his car towards them with the intention of harming them.
However, images posted on social media show otherwise.
In the video, two officers appear in the vehicle. One points his gun at the driver through the window and appears to shoot point blank as he tries to drive off.
Two others were in the car at the time of the shooting: one fled, while another, also a minor, was arrested and held by the police, according to French outlet The Local.
The incident sparked anger and disorder throughout the night, with cars and garbage cans set on fire and bus shelters destroyed. Fireworks were also launched near the police station; some 31 people were detained after the disorder.
Riot police used tear gas to disperse the protesters, some of whom set up barricades throughout the night.
