On Sunday, Tammy Gordy of Ohio was in for a shock when she went through some lottery tickets in her purse and discovered that she had won $2 million in the Powerball drawing.
“I sat in my chair. I could not see! There were all those zeros! I was like, ‘Maybe I need my glasses.’” So yeah, we yelled,” Gordy, 56, said, according to the Iowa Lottery.
Gordy, who lives in Ottumwa, said she will use some of the money she earned to finish building her house, since she and her husband lost their home in a tornado in Wapello County in 2001.
They had been in the process of building a house, but that had been put on hold for a few years. Now, they can continue with the project.
Saturday’s winning numbers were: 2-38-44-50-62 and the Powerball number was 19. The Power Play number was 3.
Gordy’s ticket matched the first five numbers but missed the Powerball to win a $1 million prize during Saturday’s drawing, according to the statement.
Since she had added the Powerball Play option when purchasing the ticket, this multiplied the prize from $1 million to $2 million.
The winning ticket was purchased at a Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh store located at 1027 N. Quincy Ave. in Ottumwa.
The Hy-Vee & Fresh store will receive a $2,000 bonus from the Iowa Lottery.
