A man identified as Taylor Taranto, 37, was arrested Thursday while he was near the home of former US President Barack Obama in DC, authorities said. This was reported by the news portal ABC News.
Taranto was detained because he had an arrest warrant due to his alleged link to the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, according to a source told ABC News.
At the time of his arrest, Taranto had multiple weapons and ammunition in his car, ABC News reported. He also allegedly had materials in his car to make at least one Molotov cocktail, authorities said.
In fact, the officers requested the support of the DC explosives team to investigate Taranto’s vehicle: a van.
Taranto reportedly made comments in a social media stream suggesting he possessed firearms, though he never directly threatened former President Obama or mentioned his name.
Who did directly threaten, according to ABC News, was Jamie Raskin, a Democratic congressman of the House of Representatives for the eighth district of Maryland since 2017
The ABC News portal also reported that Taranto’s name was mentioned by the widow of police officer Jeffrey Smith, who committed suicide after the events that occurred at the Capitol in 2021.
Likewise, Taranto was identified by Internet users as one of the individuals who would have helped another protester, identified as David Walls-Kaufman, to attack police officer Jeffrey Smith, something that Taranto himself has denied.
Until now, it is unknown when the presentation in Tarantos will be before the court, and the Obama family has not yet ruled on what happened.
