Indianapolis Colts defensive end Rashod Berry and cornerback Isaiah Rodgers were fired Thursday after being notified along with two other players of their indefinite suspension by the NFL for violating its betting policy.
The decision is “a consequence of the determination that these players violated the league’s betting policy,” justified the general manager of the Colts, Chris Ballard.
The NFL had announced hours earlier punishments for four players for violating its betting policy. Rodgers, Berry and free agent Demetrius Taylor were suspended indefinitely for betting on league games during the 2022 season.
The club’s decision condemns them to miss the 2023 season that will begin in September. “The integrity of the game is of the utmost importance. As an organization we will continue to educate our players, coaches and staff on current policies and the significant consequences that can occur with violations,” Ballard added in his message.
In Rodgers’ case, the league report explained that the player won a $1,000 Colts-related bet, though it didn’t say which game he placed it on.
Illegal bets made by Berry ranged from $25 to $1,000.
The other player sanctioned by the NFL was Nicholas Petit-Frere of the Tennessee Titans. His penalty is for the first six games of the 2023 season for betting on non-NFL sports on his team’s premises.
