The governor of Florida and presidential candidate, Ron DeSantis, recently disassociated himself from the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, by dodging a question he was asked during a campaign event in New Hampshire this Tuesday. This was reported by the news portal The Hill.
During the event, a Vermont high school student asked DeSantis if former President Donald Trump “violated the peaceful transfer of power,” referring to the events of January 6, 2021, when protesters besieged Captilo de USA
“I wasn’t anywhere near Washington that day. I had nothing to do with what happened that day,” DeSantis responded, adding that: “Obviously, I didn’t enjoy seeing what happened. But we must move on. We cannot continue to look back and remain stuck in the past.”
The Florida governor also opined that President Joe Biden’s opponents need to be “forward thinking” in order to win the next presidential election in 2024.
“If this election is about Biden’s failings and our vision for the future, we are going to win. If it’s about discussing things that happened two or three years ago, we’re going to lose,” he asserted.
Despite this, DeSantis himself has suggested, on past occasions, that, if elected as president, he would review the cases of those accused of the events of January 6, 2021, and has not ruled out the possibility of issuing pardons to those involved. . This includes former President Trump.
In fact, DeSantis assured that, if he is elected as national president, he will have a team that will review each case related to the events of January 6, 2021.
“All cases of people who have been victims of political movements or who have been criminalized will be reviewed, and we will aggressively issue pardons,” he said in an interview on the podcast “The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show.”
DeSantis’s response to the events of January 6 drew a retort from Chris Christie, a former governor of New Jersey who also recently announced his presidential candidacy.
“He says he wasn’t anywhere near Washington. Did he have a TV? Was he alive that day? Did you see what was happening? I mean, it’s one of the most ridiculous responses I’ve heard in this presidential race so far,” Christie said in an interview with Kaitlin Collins on CNN.
Likewise, Christie assured that he had responded that Trump “was the main person responsible for what happened”, and that it seemed to him “one of the most unfortunate days in the history of America.”
