Tomorrow, July 1, people living in New Jersey will receive the next payment from the Guaranteed Income Program. The payment will be $250 and will be delivered to 200 of the 400 beneficiaries of the program called Newark Movement for Economic Equity.
According to the Newark mayor’s press secretary, half of the recipients receive small payments twice a month, while the other half receive larger payments once every six months.
“We have helped people avoid eviction, we have supported residents to recover after being hospitalized with COVID, we have provided funds for families to stabilize during a great economic crisis, we have put clothes on the back of their children” said Kevin Callaghan of the Newark Philanthropic Liaison, a partnership between the city and the philanthropic community.
People who were eligible for the program had to be at least 18 years old and have an income that was well below the poverty level set by the government.
The beneficiaries of the program were randomly selected, without any type of preference.
People who receive smaller payments twice a month will receive them on the 1st and 15th of each month. On the other hand, those people who receive payments only twice a year will receive them in the months of May and October.
According to Callaghan, approximately 41% of program participants use the money they receive to make purchases at retail stores, buying clothing, food and essential items.
On the other hand, 26% allocate their funds to supermarkets to make their purchases.
In addition, there are 10% of people who use the money to pay for their housing and public services, while 9% spend it on transportation and car expenses.
