PUERTO RICO – In the continuation of the trial against Félix Verdejo, an ex-partner of the ex-boxer declared that in 2013 an abortion was performed months after becoming pregnant in the midst of a love relationship between them that lasted four years.
Amanda Colón also stressed that she was the victim of physical abuse by the defendant in the murder of Keishla Rodríguez Ortiz.
Colón recounted that his relationship with Verdejo began when they were teenagers, and that, with some frequency, they had sexual relations.
“He was my neighbor. We would see each other every Friday after leaving school at the Albergue Olímpico (in Salinas). We would see each other at my house or at his. In addition to the love relationship, he did her homework so that she would pass the grade while he concentrated on boxing, ”he said.
“His boxing career was going very well. It was fruitful, he was well focused at the time. Among the things that he mentioned to me was going to the Olympics, something that he achieved, and, in addition, he said that he wanted to be like (Floyd) Mayweather, things like that, ”he added.
Colón recalled that he was at the Verdejo residence when the first physical attack occurred.
“We were having sex, when we finished, I went down because it was a two-story house and he (Verdejo) came out completely naked. I moved it towards the kitchen part of the house. When we were in the kitchen, he slapped me,” he said.
He also testified that, on another occasion, Verdejo spat in his face while he was eating a piece of cake.
Colón pointed out that in January 2013 he found out that she is pregnant and assured that it was from the ex-boxer.
“It was the only person I was with at the time. I called it. On that first call there were a lot of people present, so we couldn’t talk. She told me that we would talk later. When I told him, he was surprised. I told him I was going to have it, but he said no. He made reference to how that was going to affect him in boxing, that he had a girlfriend, she was crazy and she was not going to have it, ”he mentioned.
According to Colón, they contacted the next day and Verdejo offered her $300 to end the pregnancy.
“We started arguing, he said that he couldn’t have it, that it was going to affect his career, he had just signed a contract, that he couldn’t have it and he had to have an abortion. The next day he called again, but his technique changed. He began to say how having the baby “was going to affect my career.” Basically the conversation was that he had to study, he was very young, he had to go to university. I replied that he could solve it, that he did not have to worry. He got upset again and we hung up the call again,” he recalled.
Colón stated that she went to a laboratory, accompanied by Yashira Verdejo, the defendant’s sister, to confirm the pregnancy.
“The next time I saw him (Verdejo) was when I went to his house to collect the $300 for the abortion. My plan was always to have the baby, so I used the money to go to a gynecologist. Several weeks passed before he found out that he had not performed the abortion on me. He called me upset asking why I didn’t get the abortion and where is his money. She began to insult me, that she was disgusted, ugly, dirty, it made her nauseous, it was a shame, that the baby would turn out ugly and the fact that she was pregnant was a punishment, ”she lamented.
However, Columbus eventually decided not to have the baby.
“My mom woke me up one morning and told me that I had to have an abortion because she didn’t want me to be another statistic. She told me that it was not easy being a single mother, without studies, without a father present, and she did not want me to have the child of someone who treated me like a common person. I felt super bad. In today’s sun I always wanted to have my baby and I regret what I did. I didn’t have the guts or the courage to say no to my mom because she was correct,” she said.
