jamaican-women's-soccer-team-had-to-do-fundraising-campaigns-to-attend-the-world-cup-in-australia-and-new-zealand

Once again, the notable difference between women’s soccer and men’s soccer is evident. The Jamaican women’s team was forced to do a couple of fundraising campaigns in order to attend the Women’s Soccer World Cup next month in Australia and New Zealand.

According to what was reported by The Athletic, the Jamaican women’s team will participate in its second Women’s Soccer World Cup thanks to two campaigns that seek to raise at least $175,000 dollars to be able to pay for the trip to the oceanic continent.

As “Reggae Girlz Rise Up” one of the campaigns on the Go Fund Me page was titled, carried out by the mother of the midfielder Havana Solaun, with which it is intended to reach the goal of $ 100,000 dollars. Another campaign entitled “Senior Reggae Girlz 2023 World Cup Preparation Campaign”, organized by the Reggae Girlz Foundation on the Give Lively page, aims to raise $75,000 to help the women’s team.

Both campaigns have accumulated more than $87,000 dollars at the time of writing this note.

They denounce unequal treatment

Two weeks ago Cheyna Matthews and Khadija “Bunny” Shaw, two of the main players of the Caribbean team, spoke out in a statement denouncing the financing situation by the Jamaican Football Federation.

“On multiple occasions, we have sat down with the federation to respectfully express our concerns arising from unequal support in terms of planning, transportation, lodging, training conditions, compensation, communications, nutrition and accessibility to appropriate resources (…) We have also presented repeatedly without receiving the compensation agreed in the contracts ”, reads part of the statement

Jamaica will open on July 23 against France. The “Reggae Girls” share a group with Brazil and Panama in the tournament co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
