The subject identified as Danny G. Tiner, 36, was arrested last Thursday facing five counts of murder, four counts of endangerment, and one count of tampering with physical evidence, as announced by the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS). .
Tiner was reportedly actively using the TikTok app on his cell phone, and was driving 68 mph in a 55 mph construction zone on Interstate 10, when his commercial truck collided with traffic that was stopped around 6:14 a.m. on January 12.
During the events, Tinner’s truck pushed two cars between other semi-trucks, as well as two other vehicles, causing the crushed cars to burst into flames, CBS 5’s 3TV reported.
The suspect initially told rescuers that he was acknowledging a message on his work tablet when the accident occurred, AZDPS said, adding that the accident caused the highway to be closed for 11 hours.
However, AZDPS and FBI investigators later determined that the driver’s phone actually had use of the TikTok platform for sharing videos.
Since then, the suspect has remained in custody at the Maricopa County Jail.
