Mayor Eric Adams reported this Saturday that the Hispanic officer Eddie Cabán will be the acting commissioner of the NYPD, after the departure of Keechant Sewell.

“First, I want to thank Commissioner Sewell for her year and a half of service to the greatest city in the world. Commissioner Sewell not only led the NYPD with distinction and honor every day, but she inspired millions of girls and boys in her role,” Adams said.

The Mayor said that when he took over the city crime was on the rise, with murders, shootings and many of the most dangerous crimes. “But today, we are safer than we were on January 1, 2022, with most serious crimes reduced, and that is, in large part, because Commissioner Sewell has taken a leadership role in the tireless work of this administration to make New York City safer.”

Regarding Cabán, Adams said: “Until we name a permanent replacement, Eddie Cabán takes the helm as interim police commissioner. He is a professional with more than three decades of service with the NYPD. I know the hard-working men and women of our city’s Police Department have a strong leader until a more formal announcement is made in the coming weeks,” the mayor said in a statement.

Caban’s trajectory

  • Until now, Cabán was the first deputy commissioner of the NYPD. He has a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from St. John’s University. He and his wife Leidy have a son, Edward, and a daughter, Ava.
  • He began his career as a police officer in 1991, patrolling the streets of the South Bronx.
  • He was promoted to sergeant in 1994. After various supervisory assignments in The Bronx and Upper Manhattan, he was promoted to lieutenant in 1999.
  • He rose through the executive ranks of the Uniformed in 2005 with a promotion to Captain.
  • He was promoted to Deputy Inspector in 2008. Most recently, he served as Program Supervisor for Patrol Borough Brooklyn North. He was later promoted to Inspector in 2015.
