On June 28, LGBTIQ+ Pride Day was celebrated worldwide and as usual, many companies, brands and even sports teams usually celebrate it with a post on social networks and even changing their logo for a few days to add the representative flag of the movement and thereby show your support.
However, sometimes this strategy doesn’t work out so well for brands. This was the case of the FC Barcelona soccer team, which modified its shield on social networks with the colors of the LGBTIQ+ flag to show its support, but the move went wrong and they ended up losing followers.
According to information from Xerpa Studiosthe FC Barcelona Instagram account lost 306,000 followers in the first 24 hours of the makeover for LGBTIQ+ Pride Day and after 48 hours the total amounted to 439,661 followers who unfollowed the team’s account.
The Catalan team has more than 122 million followers on the social network and had been gaining nearly 30,000 new users per day before the sharp drop due to the post and logo change to celebrate LGBTIQ+ Pride Day.
Of the 20 first division clubs in Spain, 10 launched a campaign to celebrate this day. Of these 10, only UD Las Palmas increased in followers, while the other 9 teams lost followers on the platform. These clubs are: Valencia, Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Osasuna, Getafe, Celta de Vigo, Mallorca and Deportivo Alavés.
Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid, the other big teams in the Spanish LaLiga, did not participate in the celebration of LGBTIQ+ Pride Day.
