Kylian Mbappé, captain of the French team and Paris Saint-Germain, once again spoke out about the murder of the young man identified as Nahel at the hands of a police officer in Nanterre, on the outskirts of Paris. On this occasion, he called for the cessation of the riots that have now totaled four consecutive days in various cities of the country.
“Since this tragic event, we have witnessed the expression of popular anger whose background we understand, but whose form we cannot consent to (…) As many of us come from popular neighborhoods, we share this feeling of pain and sadness. But that suffering is added to the pain of helplessly watching a true process of self-destruction. Violence does not solve anything, and even less when it turns inexorably and tirelessly against those who express it, “said Mbappé in a statement released on his social networks.
The 24-year-old forward called for the “appeasement, awareness and responsibility” of those who participate in the riots in this context of “extreme tension”, recalling that the neighborhoods are being destroyed at the hands of the very people who live in them. .
“The ‘coexistence’ to which we are attached is in danger, and it is everyone’s responsibility to preserve it. There are other peaceful and constructive ways to express ourselves. That is where our energies and thoughts should be focused. The time of violence must end and be replaced by a time of mourning, dialogue and reconstruction,” Mbappé claimed in the statement.
A week ago, a young man identified as Nahel was detained by two policemen who were traveling on a motorcycle and was shot at point-blank range while trying to flee from them. According to the first police version, the teenager collided with the two policemen who were riding a motorcycle, but a video shows the policeman pointing directly at the young man next to the driver’s window while the other policeman spoke to him on the same side.
As can be seen in the video, the shot occurred at the moment the young man accelerated the car, without apparently posing a direct threat to the integrity of the policemen, which was initially argued by the 38-year-old policeman who pulled the trigger and his partner, who are currently detained.
