Japan’s Defense Ministry confirmed the sighting of two Russian Navy ships in the waters off Taiwan and the Japanese islands of Okinawa over the past four days, coinciding with a similar announcement made earlier in the week by Taiwan.
According to the Taiwan Ministry of Defense, two Russian frigates were observed off its east coast, prompting the deployment of planes and ships to maintain surveillance, the Reuters agency collects.
Japan’s government expressed serious concerns last month regarding repeated Russian military activities near Japanese territory, including joint exercises with Chinese forces, which posed a significant risk to Japan’s national security.
In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year, Japan and Taiwan, along with the United States and its allies, have implemented comprehensive sanctions against Russia.
Japan’s Defense Ministry revealed that the initial detection of two Steregushchy-class frigates occurred on Tuesday morning, 40 miles southwest of Yonaguni, the westernmost island in Japan’s Okinawa prefecture near Taiwan.
The warships passed through the waters between Yonaguni and Taiwan, moving eastward, and were last detected on Friday in the waters between the islands of Miyako and Okinawa. Japan quickly sent two ships to monitor the Russian ships.
On Tuesday, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported that a group of ships from the Russian Pacific Fleet had entered the southern regions of the Philippine Sea to fulfill assigned tasks as part of a long-range sea voyage, according to publish the agency
