One of the central defenders with the most projection in world football, Josko Gvardiol, asked his club RB Leipzig this Sunday to allow him to leave for Manchester City, a team that has shown great interest in signing the Croatian player.
Gvardiol’s request was confirmed by Max Eberl, the club’s sports director, despite the fact that he is under a contract valid until 2027 after playing two seasons.
“Josko and his representatives have conveyed to us the desire to go to Manchester City”, Eberl assured, also admitting “the negotiations” between the two clubs for the 21-year-old center-back, for which, according to various media reports, Leipzig is asking for more than $100 million dollars for his transfer to the European champion.
Gvardiol, one of the defenders with the most impact in the past World Cup in Qatar 2022, arrived at Leipzig in the summer of 2022, from Dinamo Zagreb in exchange for around $18 million dollars.
Since then, in two courses, he has played 87 games, 74 as a starter, with five goals and three assists with the German club, with which he was proclaimed champion of the German Cup last season.
Leipzig has already endured three important departures for his team in this transfer market. Their goalscorer Christopher Nkunku, transferred to Chelsea for $60 million, and midfielder Konrad Laimer, who has gone free to Bayern Munich. They have been joined this Sunday by Dominik Szoboszlai, the talented Hungarian footballer sold to Liverpool for $70 million. Both entities have already made it official.
“Szoboszlai made an outstanding leap last season and has matured into a leader at Leipzig, taking responsibility and playing an important role in helping us achieve our goals again,” Eberl explained, speaking to the club’s official website. , after confirming the transfer.
“Of course, we would have liked to have Dominik in the new season and the next few years, but he has decided to go to Liverpool, an internationally superior team. It is another honor for us as a club and for the work that is being done here to take young players to the next level”, he added.
