Mike Pence, former vice president of the United States and presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, assured this Sunday that the current president of the country, Joe Biden, is to blame for the military withdrawal from Afghanistan, which left 13 Americans dead as a result. during an armed attack.
In an interview with Margaret Brennan on CBS’s “Face The Nation” program, Pence assured that the United States “went 18 months without an American death until that day, at the Kabul airport, where we lost 13 valuable and brave American members.” .
Pence added that: “The blame for what happened falls squarely on the current commander in chief,” referring to President Joe Biden.
However, a declassified document from the State Department, reviewed by The Hill news portal, indicated that both the administration of former President Donald Trump and that of Biden contributed to the chaotic withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
Likewise, the report indicated that the chief officers did not adequately prepare for more serious scenarios.
According to The Hill, the US troop withdrawal plan that Biden executed was designed, in the first instance, by the administration of former President Trump.
However, Pence assured that it was the responsibility of the Democratic president for not having taken appropriate action when the Taliban began to occupy the largest cities in Afghanistan.
“Under our administration, the intention of the president, the former president, was to withdraw the troops. But when the Taliban broke the deal and entered Mazar-e-Sharif and Joe Biden did nothing, that started the catastrophe that made Afghanistan what it is, and hopelessly ended 20 years of conflict,” Pence said. in the interview offered for CBS.
On the other hand, Pence reiterated that, under the administration of Donald Trump, the withdrawal of US troops would not have been in the same way as under the government of Joe Biden.
“And I think, at the end of the day, Afghanistan would be a very different place today. The responsibility for the disastrous recall falls squarely on President Joe Biden, and the American people know it,” he concluded.
