The president of the United States, Joe Biden, will embark on a European tour in the coming days that will take him to London, to Vilnius, in Lithuania, for the summit of leaders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and to Helsinki, in Finland. .
The White House explained that the president of the United States will begin this trip on July 9 and will conclude on July 13. In his first stop, the president will meet in London with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and King Charles III of England, in what will be the first meeting between the two since the monarch was crowned in May of this year.
After visiting the United Kingdom, Biden will go to Lithuania, to participate in the summit of leaders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in the city of Vilnius, where he will head to Helsinki, in a stop with great symbolic content. to show US support for Finland, a new member of the Atlantic Alliance.
Earlier, the White House reported that before this trip it will meet with the Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, to discuss his entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which has been stopped by Turkey and Hungary.
The Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Jens Stoltenberg, assured Istanbul that Sweden has implemented everything agreed with Turkey in order to enter the alliance in the coming weeks. Even so, the Turkish government maintains its discomfort that the Swedes are part of the coalition of countries.
The White House said Biden and Kristersson will discuss US-Swedish cooperation on security and reaffirm their view that Sweden should join NATO. Hungary and Turkey are the only North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries that have not yet ratified Sweden’s accession.
The main reason that Turkey has not yet accepted Sweden’s inclusion in NATO is that Stockholm allows demonstrations of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) on its territory.
