The defensive player of the NFL Buffalo Bills, Damar Hamlin, joined the New York Yankees of the MLB to help them in their ‘HOPE’ Week initiative, which began when the player threw the first pitch of the game between the New York team and the Baltimore Orioles.
“It’s a crazy feeling. It makes me feel like I’m doing my part and having an impact to change the world. That has been my goal all my life. Even before anyone met me I had my eye on making an impact in the world,” said Hamlin, who suffered a cardiac arrest last January.
The “HOPE” Week initiative, which will take place from July 3 to July 7, was first celebrated in 2009 by the Yankees with the aim of inspiring through acts of goodwill that raise awareness for causes. and special organizations, something Damar Hamlin has done since her incident.
It should be remembered that the Bills defender caused a great scare in the world of sports when he suffered a heart attack on January 2 of this year, while his team faced the Cincinnati Bengals in a regular season game.
Hamlin received CPR on the field. After being stabilized, he was transferred to a hospital where he remained for a week in critical condition.
In April, the McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, native was cleared to return to play, and on June 6 he reported for his first practice with the Bills since the accident.
“I didn’t know what it would be like, but I’m fine with this platform and with this story. I will continue to do my part and try to have an impact in the world to change things”, explained the player.
Hamlin visited Yankee Stadium for the game between the home team and the Baltimore Orioles. Before throwing out the first pitch, he worked with certified CPR instructors to train Yankee players and New York City Public School Athletic League staff.
Following his cardiac arrest, the NFL player has dedicated himself to supporting a bill promoting access to and training for automatic defibrillators in American schools. In March, he visited US President Joe Biden at the White House for that purpose.
Last February Hamlin was honored with the Alan Page Community Award from the NFL Players Association (NFLPA). Damar Hamlin’s foundation, “Chasing M’s,” has raised more than $10 million in donations as of January of this year.
