After an irregular season that began with the German Thomas Tuchel at the helm, Chelsea welcomed the Argentine Mauricio Pochettino who since Monday settled in London, the capital of England, and visited the training camps of the blue team with which he signed officially on July 1st.
After unsuccessful internships with French club Paris Saint-Germain, Pochettino will be an essential tool in the rebuilding of the London club that had to change owners after Russian Roman Abramovich had to step aside over the war between Ukraine and Russia. Despite spending more than $600 million on transfers, Chelsea came 12th in the Premier League last season, missing out on any European competition.
“This is where it starts” and “Welcome, Poch” were the phrases that were read in a video that the club shared about the Argentine’s arrival at the training grounds. Pochettino signed for at least two seasons and with the option of playing a third, also replacing Englishman Frank Lampard in a season in which the London team had up to four coaches.
“It is a pleasure and an honor to be at Chelsea (…) I know the club well, it was easy for us to make the decision to move (…) We want to bring joy back to the club and we want you to enjoy the game (…) The culture of winning is important, it is the most important club in England (…) Our fans are excited to get back on the winning path with us,” Pochettino said in statements to the club’s press team.
Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, said after signing the Argentine that “Mauricio’s experience, standards of excellence, leadership qualities and character will serve Chelsea Football Club well as we move forward. He is a winning coach, who has worked at the highest level, in multiple leagues and languages. His values, his tactical approach and his commitment to development make him an exceptional candidate.”
In this way, Pochettino returns to English football, where he led Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur, a team with which he became runner-up in the Champions League, in the 2018-2019 season.
