After many rumors, Buckingham Palace has confirmed that Prince Harry and his wife, the American actress Meghan Markle, have permanently abandoned their royal residence in the United Kingdom.
This information was made public thanks to the publication of the annual Sovereign Grant report, in which all the expenses of the British royal family during the year are exposed. The publication of this report is accompanied by a press conference and during this meeting, questions were asked about Frogmore Cottage, the residence inhabited by Harry and Meghan before they relinquished their royal duties.
This suggests that the couple currently only owns their mansion in Montecito, California, where they have lived since 2020.
At the same press conference it was said that the Sussex dukes have already repaid the $3 million Sovereign Grant they invested in the redevelopment of Frogmore Cottage. It was recalled that the couple was asked to pay this amount after both resigned from their positions.
Harry and Meghan had already implied that they had taken responsibility for the debt, but it is only now that their veracity has been confirmed.
According to Michael Stevens, Keeper of the Privy Purse and King’s/Queen’s Treasurer, the repayment of this debt has left “the Crown with a greatly improved asset”.
What was not confirmed or denied during this meeting is that Prince Andrés is going to move to that property, since it is known that King Carlos III wants him to leave his current residence.
