In a recent televised interview with US news channel CNN, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s power is deteriorating.
In addition, the president criticized Putin’s response to the recent uprising led by the mercenary group known as Wagner.
The Wagner group, under the command of Yevgeny Prigozhin, attempted a revolt by seizing control of the Russian city of Rostov before embarking on a “march for justice” to Moscow, with the aim of removing corrupt and incompetent Russian commanders.
However, the situation was quickly resolved and an agreement was reached. Reports indicate that Prigozhin moved to Belarus and the charges against him and other members of the Wagner group were dropped.
While the uprising may not have been successful, critics argue that it exposed weaknesses in Putin’s power, a sentiment shared by President Zelensky.
During the interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett, Zelensky emphasized Putin’s weak reaction, indicating that he is no longer in full control.
Zelensky noted that the Wagner group’s ability to move freely within Russia and exert influence in certain regions signifies a lack of control by Putin. The once formidable vertical power structure it had is now crumbling.
The Ukrainian president also expressed his highest hope of liberating Crimea, which Russia annexed nine years ago. He stressed that Ukraine cannot accept the occupation of Crimea, as it means an ongoing war.
Zelensky strongly believes that retaking Crimea is crucial for Ukraine’s victory.
Meanwhile, Ukraine announced significant gains on the eastern and southern fronts in recent intense clashes with Russian forces, retaking 14 square miles of territory.
President Zelensky acknowledged the difficulties faced, but remained optimistic about the progress made. He expressed his gratitude to those who defend Ukraine and lead the nation to victory in the ongoing conflict.
Ukrainian forces have been advancing in the direction of Bakhmut, while Russian forces have been launching attacks in the directions of Lyman, Avdiivka and Mariinka in the Donetsk region, according to reports from the Ukrainian Interior Ministry.
However, the battlefield claims and counterclaims remain unverified by independent sources or international media.
Zelensky’s comments about Putin’s crumbling power serve as a testament to the evolving dynamics in the region and the ongoing struggle for control and independence.
The situation in Ukraine continues to unfold, with implications for the broader geopolitical landscape.
