The “DeSantis War Room” account, which is a political campaign account on Twitter of Ron DeSantis, governor of Florida and presidential candidate, shared a video in which Donald Trump, former president of the United States, is attacked for having expressed their support for the country’s LGBTQ population.
“To close ‘Pride Month’, let’s hear from the politician who celebrated it more than any other Republican,” says the text written by the DeSantis War Room account to accompany the shared video, according to CNN.
In the video, Trump is portrayed as a politician sympathetic to transgender rights.
It also shows a clip in which Trump assures that he will do “everything in his power to protect LGBTQ citizens.” This clip was recorded a month after the mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, which killed 49 people.
Likewise, the video also shows how Trump allowed Caitlyn Jenner, a transgender woman and Olympian, to use the bathroom of her choice in Trump Tower.
The fact that DeSantis’ team shared the video led to it receiving a great deal of criticism.
According to The Hill news portal, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, the first openly gay man to serve as secretary in Joe Biden’s administration, wondered if DeSantis was trying to discredit himself by sharing the video.
Also, Caitlyn Jenner thought that the video was a “very low point” for the presidential campaign of Ron DeSantis.
Within the Republican Party, the video also drew criticism of DeSantis.
Yvonne Dean Bailey, a Republican congresswoman in the House of Representatives, previously assured that she was considering supporting DeSantis in the 2024 elections. After the video was published, the representative-elect assured that she would not give him her vote.
“At this point, I don’t see myself voting for DeSantis. I don’t even want to call myself a conservative. I don’t identify with these people,” Bailey said, according to The Hill.
Jason Miller, an adviser to Donald Trump, shared the video on his Twitter account and, by way of sarcasm, said that: “Someone will be fired for this.”
