The English Newcastle finally announced the incorporation of the Italian Sandro Tonali from AC Milan, the team of which he was captain, and became the first signing of “Las Urracas” for the next season.
Although the transfer fee for the 23-year-old midfielder was not disclosed, European media say it is around $80 million, which would make him the most expensive Italian player in history. Tonali arrived at Milan in 2020 on loan from Brescia, signing him the following year for more than $15 million dollars.
Now, after signing a deal with Newcastle until 2028, Tonali will earn around $7.6 million per season. In the three seasons in which he defended the colors of the Rossoneri, Tonali played 130 games, scored seven goals and provided 11 assists.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said in the club’s official statement that Tonali has the “exceptional talent, mentality, physicality and technical attributes to be a perfect fit for us.”
“At 23 years old, Sandro has important experience as a key player in one of the main leagues in Europe and in the Champions League, as well as playing for his country. But he also has the opportunity and the potential to grow and evolve with us”, added the Newcastle manager.
Tonali is the most expensive Italian in history
In what is a record number for both Milan and Newcastle, Sandro Tonali became the most expensive Italian footballer in history, far surpassing Jorginho’s signing by Chelsea, a team that in 2018 paid more than $62 million dollars to Napoli for the footballer.
The value of Tonali’s token also exceeded the amount of a historic player, a certain Gianluigi Buffon, who arrived at Juventus in 2001 from Parma for an amount of more than $57 million dollars.
