spokesman-for-the-political-committee-that-supports-desantis-admits-that-trump-is-the-most-popular-candidate-among-republican-voters

Steve Cortes, spokesman for the political action committee (PAC) that supports Ron DeSantis, Florida governor and presidential candidate, recently admitted that former President Donald Trump is the most popular candidate for the GOP presidential primaries.

“I’ll be the first to admit it. I am very clear and very honest. It’s an uphill battle, although I don’t think it’s an unwinnable battle. But, clearly, Donald Trump is the candidate who is leading the way, particularly since he was impeached,” Cortes said at an event on Twitter Spaces this Sunday night, according to The Hill news portal.

The spokesman for the PAC that supports Ron DeSantis added that Trump’s popularity, in his opinion, rose after the federal indictments against him.

Currently, Trump faces 37 charges against him for the mishandling of classified documents, which he took to his private resort, Mar-a-Lago, in 2021. Faced with these accusations, the former Republican president declared “no guilty”.

However, the federal accusation does not appear to have completely undermined Trump’s popularity, as a poll revealed that just over half of Republicans would vote for the former president in the Republican Party (GOP) primaries. English), putting him ahead of other candidates such as DeSantis.

“It is understandable,” Cortes said, “that many people want to support Trump when he has been unfairly prosecuted, or rather, persecuted.”

According to The Hill portal, Cortes was a senior adviser to former President Trump during his 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns.

However, Cortes announced, in May of this year, that he would support Ron DeSantis for the Republican Party primaries, and now serves as a spokesman for the “Never Back Down” PAC, which supports the presidential candidacy of the governor of Florida.

Despite what Cortes said, Ron DeSantis’ PAC spokesman assured for The Hill that he still believes that the Republican governor of Florida still has a good chance of achieving the presidential nomination by the GOP.
