Last Saturday, a new law went into effect that Massachusetts voters approved, expanding driver’s license eligibility to undocumented immigrants.
The Labor and Family Mobility Law allows these immigrants to apply for a Standard Class D or M driver’s license.
To do this, they must present a foreign passport or consular identification document at the state Motor Vehicle Registry (RMV).
Appointments in that office will begin this Monday, July 3, after both houses of the legislature voted to override Gov. Charlie Baker’s veto.
Although Republicans sought voter support in last November’s election, the question garnered a majority of votes in favor of the law, which was created and supported by Driving Families Forward, a coalition of more than 270 organizations.
It should be remembered that this document is not a REAL ID, so it cannot be used for identification in federal spaces or change the immigration status of a person.
