The European Union said on Monday that the political disqualification of Venezuelan opposition member María Corina Machado “undermines democracy and the rule of law” in Venezuela, and it is a decision that contributes to “deepen” the country’s political crisis.
“The EU expresses its deep concern with the decisions that try to prevent members of the opposition from exercising their fundamental political rights, as has been the case of María Corina Machado,” said the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, it’s a statement.
“These decisions undermine democracy and the rule of law and will only deepen the long political and social crisis in Venezuela,” continued the head of European diplomacy.
The Comptroller General of Venezuela decided to disqualify Corina Machado for 15 years, after a patrimonial investigation in which -assured the institution- errors and omissions were determined in the affidavits of patrimony evaluated during the corresponding audit.
The decision was made known last Friday when it was released by deputy José Brito, who asked the Comptroller for information on the status of the anti-Chavista, who presented her candidacy for the October primaries.
Borrell said that holding a 2024 presidential election that is “credible, transparent and inclusive is an essential part of the solution” to the political crisis in Venezuela.
He also recalled that the Electoral Observation Mission that the EU sent to Venezuela in 2021 requested the abolition of the prerogative of the Comptroller General’s Office to “strip citizens of their fundamental right to stand for election through an administrative procedure and without timely notification.” .
