The renowned and multi-champion American tennis player, Venus Williams, assured this weekend that she does not think about retiring from her professional career and that she feels fully capable of maintaining her active career until she is 50 years old; She made these statements prior to her participation in what will be her 24th participation in Wimbledon, one of the four Grand Slams of the season.
Venus, who has won a total of seven Grand Slam titles at the age of 43, assured that she does not want to follow in the footsteps of her sister Serena Williams when she retired last September 2022 to dedicate herself completely to her family; She maintained that she still has a lot to offer white sports and that she wants to continue playing as many games as she can.
“I suppose that there are great benefits that the circuit offers you in terms of insurance and coverage. I need them, so while we’re at it, let’s continue playing (shy laugh). It’s still fun to play tennis, although without Serena not so much anymore. It’s clear that I miss her. Playing tennis is something I’ve done all my life, and I’ve reached a level that very few have. Continuing to play is, in a way, a show of gratitude and appreciation for all that I have done,” she expressed.
“I have worked very hard, like the rest of the players on the circuit. When you work hard, you do it because you want to get a positive result. That is why I have worked so much, there is no more”, added the American.
These statements by Venus were made at a press conference prior to her participation this Monday in Wimbledon, a championship that she had already won five previous times throughout her career.
“It has never been played at a professional level at 50 years old, so if there is someone who could try it, it is me,” he stressed about the possibility of his retirement.
To finish, Venus highlighted that Wimbledon, a competition in which she will play for the first time since 2017, is one of her favorite championships throughout the history that she has achieved on her grass and also for what she represents within the white sport.
“This tournament means a lot to me, the Grand Slams are the tournaments that mean the most to me, so it would be a privilege to play there. However, right now I am completely focused on this tournament. The US Open is still a long way off, although my home tournament is always a precious tournament for me”, she concluded.
The older sister of the Williams and former number 1 in the WTA world ranking is currently in position 554. However, this has not caused her desire to continue playing to go out.
