The movie ‘Barbie’, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, was totally banned in Vietnam due to claims by the same country about the territorial misrepresentation shown on a map in a scene from the film.
The problem is that the scene in question shows a map with the “nine dotted line”. A cartographic and territorial representation that pays attention to China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea. Claims that have already been rejected by the United Nations, but China refuses to accept this decision.
According to the director general of the Vietnam Film Department of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Vi Kien Thanh, the ban was decided by the National Film Evaluation Council. Making it clear that “We do not license the American film ‘Barbie’ to be released in Vietnam because it contains the offensive image of the nine-dot line.”
It should be said that many more productions have had problems being distributed in Vietnam for this very reason. As is the case with ‘Uncharted’ from 2022 and ‘Abominable’ from 2019.
