A 16-year-old teenager, identified as Jovanni Sirio-Cardona, was arrested and charged with murder after he allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend, a young woman who had tried to end the relationship a few weeks earlier, according to reports authorities. This was reported by the news portal NBC News.
The crime occurred on June 16. On that date, Sirio-Cardona apparently entered the home of his ex-girlfriend, identified as Lily Silva-Lopez, through her bedroom window and shot her multiple times, according to the Bureau. Weld County District Attorney’s Office.
According to information issued by the Prosecutor’s Office, the authorities learned that both Sirio-Cardona and Silva-López had been dating for six months, and that the young woman tried to end the relationship four weeks before the shooting.
Per the indictment, Sirio-Cardona will be tried as an adult, despite being 16 years old.
Court records obtained by KUSA in Denver, an NBC-affiliated outlet, indicate that Silva-Lopez told her 13-year-old brother to run after seeing Sirio-Cardona enter their bedroom through a window.
Subsequently, the investigations indicate that Sirio-Cardona would have shot Silva-López in the corridor of the residence, a house-trailer.
Authorities declared Silva-Lopez deceased at the crime scene. She was 15 years old at the time of her death and she had just finished her tenth grade.
In addition, court records reviewed by KUSA indicate that when police arrived at Sirio-Cardona’s home, the suspect told the grandmother that he “did what he had to do and shot someone.”
So far, Sirio-Cardona is being held on $2 million dollar bail, although it is unknown exactly where he is located. According to NBC News, he must appear in court on August 3, according to information from the Prosecutor’s Office.
If found guilty, Sirio-Cardona could be sentenced to life imprisonment, as he is being tried as if he were an adult.
