Contrary to what many people think, the consumption of oil is related to harmful health effects such as an increased risk of appearing to have cardiovascular diseases.

The specialist in functional medicine, Dr. Carlos Jaramillo explains that “oil is a food that, although it seems harmless, can be deadly in large quantities.”

“Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and excessive oil consumption can increase the risk of suffering from it,” he adds.

It should be noted that heart disease is one of the three leading causes of death worldwide along with cancer and traffic accidents.

Heart disease has aggravating factors such as: smoking, lack of physical activity and excessive alcohol consumption, to this is added the consumption of oil “and it is a more deadly food than sugar,” says Jaramillo.

A few years ago “we did not consume as much vegetable oil as we do now.” Currently “instead of using natural fats such as butter, we use processed vegetable oils that contain trans fats and other harmful components for our health.”

The transformation of butter

He explains that butter was once considered a staple and healthy food, however now most of the butter sold in the market is processed and contains trans fats.

The way we eat has also changed, since before the consumption of saturated fats was higher and “there weren’t so many problems because we did it in a more controlled way.”

For the specialist, the excess consumption of vegetable oil is what is really affecting us, and even worse if it is reused. “Since it breaks down and turns into harmful chemicals for our body. The reality is that the deadliest food of all is not sugar as previously thought.”

Other options

To improve and prevent cardiovascular diseases, the specialist recommends replacing vegetable oil with coconut or extra virgin olive oil.
