A little more than a day after a video was leaked in which a Mexican fan appears stabbing a compatriot during the game between Mexico and Qatar for the Gold Cup held on Sunday, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) ruled on the matter and He asked to work together with Concacaf to prevent something like this from happening again.
“In the Mexican Football Federation we regret and strongly condemn the acts of violence that arose after last Sunday’s game in Santa Clara. We are fully willing to cooperate and join efforts with Concacaf, the stadiums and local authorities, to prevent these acts from being repeated,” the entity said.
During the game between the Mexicans and Qataris held on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, there was a great confrontation between fans of the South American team in which one of them took out a sharp weapon and stuck it in the chest of a compatriot.
“We are sure that the corresponding instances will take the necessary measures to reach the last consequences against those who are responsible. We wish the speedy recovery of those who were injured,” added the governing body of Mexican soccer in its statement.
The images that went viral about this event allowed the Santa Clara Police Department to take a photograph of the attacker and publish it with a “wanted” status, along with the woman who accompanied him.
In addition to the stabbing, in the match in which Qatar beat Mexico 0-1, those attending Levi’s Stadium made the homophobic cry for which the FMF has been fined several times by FIFA.
This expression, classified by FIFA as discriminatory, is often used by local fans as a way of expressing their anger when the Mexican team plays poorly or because of the bad decisions of the federation’s managers.
Mexican fans are disappointed in their team, after failing in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and losing 0-3 to the United States in the semifinals of the Concacaf Nations League.
The defeat by the United States, Mexico’s greatest rival, caused the dismissal of Argentine Diego Cocca as team coach and the interim appointment of Jaime Lozano.
