The president of the United States, Joe Biden, pointed out this Tuesday in his speech on independence day, that democracy must be defended generation after generation, since it is never guaranteed.
During a barbecue at the White House with military relatives motivated to celebrate independence, the Democratic president pointed out that “history has taught us that democracy is never, never, never guaranteed. Each generation has had to fight to maintain it, treasure it, defend it and strengthen it”.
Biden was accompanied by the first lady, Jill Biden, as well as the Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, and noted that the United States is the only country in the world that was founded on the idea that “all human beings are created equal.”
The 80-year-old president stressed that all people have inalienable rights such as the right to life, liberty and happiness, adding that the United States should never stray from these principles, the EFE news agency reported.
He also indicated that during the country’s 247-year history, great progress has been achieved due to “the people of this nation and not because of its politicians.”
“We have to keep the faith and always remember who we are. We are the United States of America and there is nothing we cannot achieve if we work together,” she added.
The Democratic leader will seek his re-election for the 2024 presidential elections, in which he could again compete against Donald Trump, 77, who is the favorite in the Republican primaries.
Regarding his chances of re-election, Biden insisted on several occasions that American democracy is in danger due to the extremist ideals that Trump represents, referring to the assault on the capitol on January 6, 2021.
Most recently, the conservative-majority Supreme Court ruled on Friday to block Biden’s plan to cancel student debt for millions of college students, opposed by just three progressive justices. The court found that the Biden administration did not have the right to approve the measure.
