A shooting that took place in the Kingsessing section of the city of Philadelphia left five dead and at least eight injured on Monday, according to local media.
The shooting began around 8:30 p.m. on the eve of Independence Day, at 56th Street and Chester Avenue.
The shooter, a 40-year-old man who was armed with a rifle and a pistol and was wearing a bulletproof vest, was captured by police, according to the media.
“Our officers were able to stop the man in the back alley of 1600 Frazier Street and when they did, this man was wearing a bulletproof vest with multiple magazines. He also had a (police) scanner, an AR-style rifle and a handgun,” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw noted.
Among the victims of the shooting there are at least two young minors, however, no further details about their health conditions have been revealed.
The people shot missing ranged in age from 20 to 59, ABC 6 reported.
Authorities said the fifth shooting victim was found four hours later, saying a man returned home to discover his 31-year-old son shot dead in the living room.
“We believe that because of where he was found and where his home is on 56th Street and the fact that we found ballistic evidence that matches ballistic evidence that we found on the street a few hours earlier, we believe this homicide is related,” the homicide said. Chief Inspector Scott Small.
A Philadelphia police officer heard the shooting, which unfolded southwest of the city, and found at least one person shot at the crime scene.
Likewise, different police agencies received several reports denouncing a man who was shooting in the street and who was armed with a rifle.
The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was captured and arrested by officials who went to the site and found two firearms in different places near where the victims were.
The agents announced that a second person was arrested for allegedly taking a weapon and shooting the suspect in the shooting.
According to the Gun Violence archive, this year 2023 there were 339 mass shootings in the United States.
Gun Violence is a nonprofit incident investigation organization that has defined a mass shooting as a single incident in which at least four people, other than the gunman, are shot.
