Union County police say a Burger King worker in South Carolina allegedly gave customers French fries that had been picked up from the trash.
According to the Union Police Department statement, this occurred at a Burger King branch in Duncan Bypass, located on Highway 176. The employee was arrested.
Jaime Christine Major, 39, was charged with committing malicious acts of tampering with food with the intent to serve it to customers.
According to law enforcement authorities, officers went to the restaurant on July 9 in response to a disturbance call.
During the incident, police officers witnessed two women arguing with restaurant staff, threatening each other and using offensive language.
An officer asked the women to calm down, but they continued to behave in a rowdy manner. One of the officers then arrested one of the women for causing a public disturbance.
However, two days later, on July 11, police received another complaint alleging that they were allegedly throwing French fries into a trash can and then serving them to customers.
Police reported that Major discarded the fries in the trash, removed them and put them in the fries bin, then put fresh fries on top of the old ones.
“These allegations do not align with the brand’s commitment to quality food and service and creating an exceptional experience for customers,” a Burger King spokesperson told FOX Business.
“The franchisee of this restaurant is cooperating with local authorities and will take appropriate action based on the findings,” he added.
“As this remains an ongoing investigation, we are unable to share additional details at this time,” Burger King added.
On July 17, Major was taken to the Union County Detention Center and held on $20,000 bond.
Under South Carolina law, maliciously tampering with a pharmaceutical or food product with the intent to cause bodily harm to someone is considered a felony.
If convicted, Major could face up to 20 years in prison.
