A Florida man killed a pregnant woman and her unborn baby before killing himself Friday in a double murder-suicide case involving domestic issues, authorities said.
The subject, identified as 26-year-old Riley Groover, shot the 21-year-old woman, whose identity has not been released, multiple times around 7 p.m. before committing suicide in front of several witnesses outside her home, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.
First responders on the scene and hospital medical staff were reportedly unable to save the unborn baby.
“This was a horrific and violent double murder that took the life of a 21-year-old woman who was 8 months pregnant and her unborn child,” Sheriff Grady Judd said in a written statement. “When the suspect became enraged, her family members and neighbors did everything they could to help her get away from him. Keep this family in your prayers.” A neighbor who witnessed the shooting told WFTS-TV that Groover was seen running out of the house after the pregnant woman, yelling, “I’m going to kill you.”
According to family members, investigators, the couple had arguments that became physical in the past.
However, none of those incidents were reported to the police, the sheriff’s office said.
It was learned that the perpetrator of the crime had previous arrests for aggravated assault and domestic violence. The victim was not involved in any of the above incidents.
At the moment, no further details have been released about the double murder-suicide.
