This Monday the physical trainer of the Sports University of Lima, the Uruguayan Sebastián Avellino, regretted the act of racism that he carried out during a match against Corinthians of Brazil for the Copa Sudamericana.
Avellino thanked the support he received from the Peruvian club and his teammates after he was released from prison.
“I deeply regret from my heart everything that happened and everything that was generated. I am sorry for all the people who were affected, from the bottom of my heart, and, above all, I am very sorry for everything that the institution has suffered because of this problem, ”he said full of emotion during a press conference.
“I affirm and shout out loud my anti-racist opinion that it has been like this throughout my life,” added the member of the coaching staff of the Inca team.
Avellino will remain free with the judicial process he faces in Brazil for acting like a monkey in front of the Corinthians fans.
The administrator of Universitario, Jean Ferrari, who accompanied Avellino during the appearance, criticized and described as “regrettable” the “disproportion” applied by the Brazilian authorities.
In addition, Ferrari denied that the University of Peru is a racist institution and stated that it would not go into detail about Avellino’s performance.
In turn, Ferrari, who said he did not want to judge or “go into detail” in Avellino’s performance in the match against Corinthians, denied that Universitario is a racist institution.
“We cannot talk about a racial issue, because, obviously, the members of these sports institutions (…) are from different cultures, races, social classes, religions (…) I find it unfortunate that it can be so easily mentioned that such an institution is racist,” said the representative of the U.
“The racial issue, the discriminatory issue, the homophobic issue has no place within any sports institution,” he said, noting that the club will launch campaigns against these problems.
He also assured that, once the legal process is finished, the club will take the “corresponding sanctions”, but they will wait to announce any decision in this regard so as not to interfere with the cause.
Despite this, he announced that the coach will be psychologically evaluated for what he experienced in Brazil, where he went through nine prisons and put his life in danger, according to Ferrari, and will soon be incorporated into training.
“He is entering a psychological evaluation stage today so that we, together with the technical command, can incorporate him into training. In the next few days, surely, we will have him joining the campus again,” said the administrator of the U.
It is worth remembering that Avellino was arrested by the Brazilian police on July 11, after the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals, which was played at the Neo Química Arena in Sao Paulo.
The Brazilian Prosecutor’s Office sustained in its accusation that during the last minutes of the game, Avellino “freely and consciously” made various gestures against the rival fans “in clear provocation” and “assuming to promote riot or incite violence.”
“Immediately, he simulated monkey gestures with his arms addressing the Brazilian fans,” said the prosecutor’s office, which included images of the moment.
Judge Antonio Maria Patiño accepted the complaint filed the day before by the Prosecutor’s Office for the crimes of “racial discrimination” and “incitement to violence”, but allowed the defendant, who is in Lima, to respond to the process in freedom.
