In a show of military prowess, the Ukrainian armed forces destroyed a prized Russian Zoopark-1 1L219 counter-battery radar system using precision-guided artillery shells, as shown in newly revealed footage.

The precision-guided 155mm Excalibur artillery shell struck the radar system with deadly accuracy, triggering a spectacular fireball.

This successful strike is part of Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to target Russian military assets, including its counter-battery radar systems, in the disputed Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.

Excalibur’s Shocking Precision

The Excalibur shells used by the Ukrainian military use GPS guidance and inertial navigation systems, making them highly resistant to jamming efforts.

These sophisticated artillery shells are programmed with precise coordinates before being fired, ensuring their accuracy as they glide towards their intended targets, Newsweek reveals.

Defense manufacturer Raytheon Technologies, together with British defense giant BAE Systems, co-produces the Excalibur projectiles.

With a range of approximately 25 miles and an accuracy of approximately 6 feet, an Excalibur weapon can accomplish what would otherwise require at least ten conventional rounds.

Strategic objective: Zoopark-1 radar system

The Zoopark-1 1L219 counter-battery radar system, detected and targeted by Ukrainian special forces, was identified as an “expensive target that causes significant problems for our troops.”

This radar system is crucial for the detection of Ukrainian artillery targets, including multiple launch rocket and mortar systems.

The destruction of this high-value asset demonstrates Ukraine’s commitment to neutralizing enemy capabilities and safeguarding its troops.

Both Ukraine and Russia have been actively targeting each other’s counter-battery radars, and these systems are relatively few in number, but have a significant impact on the battlefield.

However, their active electromagnetic signatures make them vulnerable to enemy attacks. The UK Ministry of Defense reported that Russia has already lost several Zoopark-1M systems in Ukraine, with limited prospects for replacement due to targeted sanctions on high-tech electronics.
