Walmart announced the launch of Walmart+ Assist, a half-price membership program for people receiving government assistance.
“At Walmart+, we believe everyone should be able to enjoy all the ways a Walmart+ membership helps save time and money, with benefits like free grocery shipping and delivery, nationwide gas discounts, and streaming video with Paramount+ at no additional cost,” the retailer said in a statement.
Walmart+ Assist, is a program that offers customers with government assistance a 50% discount on a paid monthly or annual Walmart+ membership plan.
To get a Walmart+ Assist membership at the new price of $6.47/month or $49/year, applicants need to register (you can do so here).
Some of the benefits of Walmart+ Assist are:
Savings of over $800 per year using free store delivery
Savings of over $500 per year with free shipping
· Savings of more than $75 per year on gas at more than 14,000 locations
Savings of over $70 per year with a Paramount+ subscription
The program is available to all eligible new and existing members. Customers who qualify and sign up will receive a prorated refund and the new pricing will start immediately.
This isn’t the first time Walmart has supported customers using government assistance—in 2019, the company was one of the first retailers to begin participating in the USDA’s SNAP online shopping pilot. The multi-year implementation allows customers to pay with their SNAP benefits online, giving them access to services like pickup and delivery.
With the recent addition of Alaska to the program, Walmart has the ability to accept SNAP benefits online in all 50 states.
According to the statement, Walmart+ Assist was designed to help people who need it most: “We are making it easier and more affordable for government-assisted customers to become members and take advantage of the full suite of savings Walmart+ has to offer them.”
