The arrest of a third grade teacher has made headlines after she was allegedly found drunk while on duty on the first day of school.

Kimberly Coates, 53, a teacher at Perkins-Tryon Middle School in Perkins, Oklahoma, was taken into custody after engaging in behavior that raised concerns among administrators and law enforcement.

The incident unfolded as administrators and school officials confronted Coates about his unusual behavior.

Recently released body camera video captures the intense interaction as Superintendent Doug Ogle and the school resource officer addressed the situation.

Coates, who appeared dazed and visibly excited, was confronted about the contents of a blue mug from which she had been drinking. Although she initially claimed it was her “juice”, the officer quickly identified it as wine by her scent.

The teacher then attempted to attribute her behavior to anxiety medication, though subsequent events would paint a different picture.

A breathalyzer test administered to Coates revealed a staggering blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level of 0.24, three times the legal driving limit of 0.08. This revelation contradicted his explanations, leaving little room for dispute.

Although he denied being under the influence during his teaching hours, Coates admitted to consuming a significant amount of alcohol the night before, consuming “half a case of wine” until the wee hours of the morning.

Despite his efforts to provide alternative explanations, Sgt. Spencer Gedon questioned the viability of his claims, stating that his BAC level suggested recent consumption rather than yesterday’s influence.

Superintendent Doug Ogle also weighed in, stating that Coates appeared to be in a normal state before the school day began at 8:25 a.m. His observation cast further doubt on the veracity of his account.

The turning point came when Coates was informed of her impending arrest. Overcome with her emotion, she pleaded with the officer not to stop her, expressing her anguish over the situation.

In response, Ogle informed Coates of the seriousness of the situation, emphasizing that his behavior was unacceptable, particularly given the presence of children.

Coates was subsequently arrested for public intoxication and expelled from the school premises.
