The director of Mexican soccer teams Duilio Davino, gave a coup of authority this Thursday by confirming that the Colombian striker Julián Quiñones wants to be summoned by the coach Jaime Lozano and be able to be part of the ‘Tri’, facing the 2026 World Cup.
“Julián wants to play for Mexico, we already spoke with him, as with other footballers. He feels identified with the opportunity for life that the country has given him. If when he is summoned he shows that he has the illusion of playing for Mexico, why not open the doors for him, ”said Davino at the press conference for the official presentation of Lozano as the new DT.
The Colombian striker who currently plays for América in the Liga MX, participated in the lower categories of the Colombian national team, however, in the process to obtain Mexican nationality, he made public his desire to play for “Tri” if he receives the call for a summons.
The 26-year-old striker arrived in Mexico in 2015 to sign for Tigres UANL, a club with which he did not debut until 2016. He was there until June 2021, after going through some assignments to other clubs.
Finally, in the summer of 2021, he signed for Atlas, a team where he became a fundamental piece for the club to achieve the two-time championship in 2021-2022. He played there until 2023, playing 83 games in which he scored 36 goals.
He signed for América for this season, which has started in great shape, adding two scores and two assists in three games played, all as a starter.
In addition to Quiñones, Lozano ruled out that there is a veto for footballers like Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, from the LA Galaxy of the MLS, and stated that in the coming days he will meet with Carlos Vela, from LAFC, to discuss a possible return to the national team. .
Lozano promised that Mexico will get a pass to the semifinals in the next Copa América, to be played in the United States in 2024, and reach the same instance in the 2026 World Cup.
Mexico will organize the 2026 World Cup together with Canada and the United States, and Lozano hopes to surpass the result of the editions in which the country was also local, when they reached the quarterfinals in Mexico in 1970 and 1986.
