A man in an alleged shooting at a biker bar in Orange County, California, has been identified as John Snowling, a retired police officer, authorities said. This was reported by the news portal NBC News.

The shooting, which occurred last Wednesday night in Cook’s Corner, 50 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, left four people dead, including Snowling himself.

According to NBC News, Snowling was a sergeant with the Ventura Police Department and worked there until his retirement in 2014, the Orange County prosecutor’s office reported. The Ventura Police Department confirmed that Snowling worked in the coastal city from July 1986 to February 2014.

Snowling was apparently in divorce proceedings with his wife at the time of the shooting.

Ventura County Superior Court records show the divorce proceedings began on December 21 and the matter is still ongoing.

Snowling’s wife was injured in the shooting but was not killed, according to a statement from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Thursday.

John Snowling was one of eight children of US Navy veteran George Louis “Buddy” Snowling, who passed away in early 2020, according to NBC News.

The retired police officer and his wife were the man’s primary caregivers in his last month of life, according to a widely circulated obituary of Father Snowling.

The Ventura Police Department has pledged to assist Orange County Sheriff’s deputies in the ongoing investigation of the shooting.

“Our hearts are heavy with the disturbing incident at Cook’s Corner,” Chief Darin Schindler said in a statement.

“We offer our sincerest condolences to the families of the victims, to the survivors, and to the Orange County deputies who quickly responded to the scene. This incident deeply affects all of us,” Schindler said, according to NBC News.

Former Sergeant Snowling also served as union president and performed a variety of duties for the Ventura Police Department, including patrol, traffic and homeless assistance.

“He had a very normal career, not much else to report,” Ventura Police Cmdr. Sarah Heard said.
